Phil was born in Christchurch, NZ and grew up in New Hampshire, where he began going on camping trips with his dad at a young age. This sparked an early interest in the outdoors which led to his first of three Outward Bound courses at age 15, and his first taste of true wilderness. This continued through the summers of sophomore, junior, and senior year of high school with a new course in a new place each year, taking him through the mountains of Maine, the lakes and northwoods of Minnesota, and the remote Atikaki Provincial Park in Manitoba. After enrolling in college and earning a forestry degree, Phil decided this field was not where he wanted to work, and returned to school to earn a degree in Experiential Education and Psychology from the University of New Hampshire. Since graduating in 2001, Phil has worked as a field instructor at the Aspen Achievement Academy and a guide at Summit Achievement, a therapeutic boarding school in Maine. He recently spent a decade working at Outward Bound at every level from intern to program manager overseeing the Intercept program, an early at-risk intervention program in Minnesota.

When not working, Phil enjoys snowboarding, hiking and backpacking, reading and music.
